Providing Support, Guidance and Shelter to Homeless Men, Women and Children

HumanKind Ministries operates one year-round homeless shelter and one men’s Emergency Winter Shelter in Wichita, KS. Through spring 2021, we will also be operating a 24/7 women’s shelter. These shelters serve more than 1,500 struggling men, women and children each year.  Above and beyond basic needs, HumanKind Ministries offers clients support and guidance to connect them with community resources and to develop the life skills needed to achieve and maintain a healthy and stable home life.

HumanKind Homeless Shelters

The Inn, powered by HumanKind

The Inn is a 24-hour, full-service facility, providing shelter, meals, clothing and other basic living essentials for individuals, single parents and families.

Opened on Valentine’s Day in 1985, The Inn can provide shelter and meals and is almost always full. Some have been on the streets for years while others find themselves without a place to stay for the first time in their lives. Case management staff provides support to the clients that helps them address their unique challenges, find and maintain permanent housing, and build brighter futures for themselves and their families.

Safe Haven

Formerly a shelter for chronically homeless and mentally ill adult men and women, Safe Haven shut down in 2018 when government funding was reallocated. We hope to reopen this facility once funds become available.

Men's Emergency Winter Shelter

Operates annually November 1–March 31
The need for a homeless shelter is greater than our year-round capacity, so for the five coldest months of the year, HumanKind Ministries operates the Men’s Emergency Winter Shelter to provide dinner, breakfast and a safe, warm, dry place to sleep for anyone who needs it. We serve more than 100 men on most nights between November 1 – March 31.

Please contact the HumanKind Ministries office if you are a part of a group who might be interested in providing a meal.

In 2014, HumanKind started a partnership with Guadalupe Clinic to provide on-site tuberculosis skin testing, flu shots, blood sugar and blood pressure monitoring and wound care. In addition, Guadalupe Clinic nursing staff provided patient education on diabetes, hypertension and other common afflictions of the homeless population. This partnership has resulted in fewer illnesses and fewer visits to the emergency room.

Working with Episcopal Social Services through a grant from the Kansas Health Foundation, HumanKind Ministries case managers have conducted smoking reduction classes at the Spiritual Center. Through education and encouragement the goal is to reduce the number of cigarettes, leading to gradual cessation.

Women's 24/7 Shelter

While we typically operate Emergency Winter Shelters for men and women, we are extending hours and dates for our women’s shelter this spring. The temporary women’s shelter is open 24/7 to provide shelter, laundry, and showers.

From November 1 the women’s shelter will revert to an emergency winter shelter within the Community Room at Villa Courts with capacity for 45 women.
