Shelter Services

Support, Guidance and Shelter For All

HumanKind Ministries operates an Emergency Winter Shelter and an extended stay shelter. These shelters serve approximately 1,400 individuals and families each year. Above and beyond basic needs, through our shelters, clients can access support to connect them with community resources and to develop the life skills needed to maintain a healthy and stable home life.

The Inn

The Inn is a 60-bed, 24-hour, facility, providing shelter, meals, clothing, and other basic living essentials to individuals and families. A typical stay is 30-45 days but guests are welcome to stay as long as they need to address their obstacles to housing.

Opened on Valentine’s Day in 1985, The Inn can provide shelter and meals and is almost always full. Some have been on the streets for years while others find themselves without a place to stay for the first time in their lives. Case management staff provides support to the clients that helps them address their unique challenges, find and maintain permanent housing, and build brighter futures for themselves and their families.

We try our hardest to accommodate guests and groups of all sizes on a first-come, first-served basis. However, given our dorm-style rooms and guests’ ever-changing circumstances, please call ahead to confirm bed availability.

Winter Shelters

This year HumanKind will operate a no-barrier winter shelter located at 2220 E. 21st, N, the former Fundamental Learning Center on the northeast side of Wichita. There is no need to call ahead to reserve a spot–all are welcome.

Transportation

There are two options for transportation available to shelter guests.

Option #1: Winter shelter guests will have the option to use a free charter bus service to get to and from the Winter Shelter in the morning and evening. The bus will pick up shelter guests every morning at 9:30a from EWS and drop them off in midtown at The HumanKind Studios, located at 1011 N. Topeka Ave. This bus will run Mon-Sun, including holidays.

The bus will also do a pickup at The Studios at 5:45p and drop them off at EWS (2220 E. 21st N.), Mon-Sun, including holidays. The 5:45p service will be the final pickup time each evening. All shelter guests needing transportation to the EWS must wait at The Studios and be there no later than 5:45.

Option #2: The City of Wichita will operate a free Shelter bus on route 28 throughout the Winter Shelter season. This bus route will be available to Shelter guests during usual bus hours, this excludes holidays.

Bus route 28 will run on a 45-minute loop and will pick up shelter guests at the corner of Broadway and 9th St. and drop off at 2220 E. 21st St. N.

In addition to food and shelter, through partnerships with local health clinics, we are able to offer basic medical and preventative care at the Winter Shelter. These partnerships have resulted in fewer illnesses and fewer visits to the emergency room.

We rely heavily on volunteers and seasonal staff to administer services in these shelters. If either of these interests you, please click the links below to learn more.
