Volunteer Spotlight – Tiffany Smith

“We’re all on this earth to help each other— I’d rather give than get.”

Tiffany Smith first became involved with HumanKind by donating items but always wanted to donate her time, too. When she realized our volunteer opportunities extended beyond regular working hours, she was excited to sign up for the clothing closet at our women’s emergency winter shelter where she is now a regular volunteer.

She likes spending her time in the EWS because of the sense of sanctuary she sees it bring some women. “I met a young lady who was dropped off without shoes or a coat in the middle of winter,” says Tiffany. “She stuck with me because she appeared to feel safe there. The shelter wasn’t a scary place to her.”

Tiffany, like many of our volunteers is also struck by the generosity many clients have, despite having very little of their own. She recounts the time a lady who, after having had a hard time finding a jacket that fit, finally found one but gave it away to another client. “I would always rather give then get so I know why the ladies often give their things away. I‘m glad I can be there to make sure their generosity doesn’t mean they go without—we’re all on this earth to help each other.”

As well as her regular work in the women’s shelter, Tiffany was also a key member of the Operation Holiday warehouse team this year. Thank you, Tiffany from all of us at HumanKind for your time, energy and your giving spirit.
