Community Spotlight – ICT Food Rescue

Collaboration.

Collaboration is at the heart of our work, at HumanKind—one of four core values it is a critical piece of our success. We know that organizations that join forces are capable of anything. Collaboration is also at the heart of ICT Food Rescue–a local agency that rescues surplus food from restaurants, grocers, and catered events in Wichita. Stephanie Merritt founded ICT Food Rescue after working a job where food surplus was thrown out every day. Stephanie was determined to become the middle woman between donors (restaurants, grocers, catered events, etc.) and receiving agencies (food pantries, foster homes, recovery centers, etc.) to create a beautiful partnership and deliver food surplus to those who need it most.

ICT Food Rescue’s mission is simple—distribute unavoidable food surplus and share it with the food insecure of Wichita. Merritt says, “Our organization simply becomes the middle spoke to the wheel of food rescue. We offer our service free to both our receiving and donating agencies. We pick up food surplus and deliver it to those organizations that serve our food insecure community members.”

ICT Food Rescue saves thousands of pounds of food each year. Last year alone, they rescued more than 200,000 pounds of food surplus from area restaurants and grocery stores, equating to 170,000 meals and saving non-profits more than $350,000.

HumanKind is proud to collaborate with such amazing organizations like ICT Food Rescue. Thank you, ICT Food Rescue, for cultivating a beautiful partnership, helping thousands of food insecure in Wichita. We are grateful for the work you do transforming the community, one food donation at a time.
